Europe's landscapes are changing their character as result of a range of interacting processes including the modernization of agricultural practices, (peri-)urbanization, abandonment of marginal agricultural lands, infrastructure development and changing societal requirements. This presentation aims at providing an overview of the extent and direction of the consequences of these different developments on European landscapes, their values in terms of ecosystem services and cultural heritage and biodiversity values. The potential of different spatial modelling tools to inform policy and stakeholder discussion and design novel land system trajectories is provided and illustrated by examples at different spatial scales ranging from a pan-European overview to individual landscapes across Europe.
