Abstract:

The 2-D assessment of ES impacts of LULCC scenarios is meanwhile based on a valid set of indicators, including landscape metrics assessments (Frank et al., 2011, 2012; Fürst et al., 2013). However, some services depend strongly from 3-D structures within single ecosystems and the variation of such structures at the landscape scale (Stupariu et al., 2017). For instance, regulative forest ecosystem services are known to be highly reliant on the abundance of different crown layers and their properties (Goldberger and Bernhofer, 2001). Also other regulative and cultural services are highly impacted by 3-D structures (topography, vegetation, built environment). For instance, the often negative perception of wind power plants is due to their long distance visibility that can be experienced as a disturbance of the aesthetical quality of a landscape (Devine-Wright, 2005).
This flash talk presents some advances in the LULCC scenario simulation and assessment platform GISCAME. Our vision is to make stronger use of 3-D data sets such as LIDAR by implementing their data structure into scenario simulation tools through defining objects for redesigning landscapes. In combination with 3-D metrics, we expect advances in connecting better knowledge-based landscape design with its (perceived) impact on human well-being.
